Why choose a solid wood bunk bed for adults?
The solid wood bunk bed uses the room’s height to fit two beds within a single footprint. The wood provides reassuring stability and warmth, rather than the feel of a purely functional frame. In an adult bedroom, its lines should remain understated and its proportions easy to take in.
The selection includes 90x190 and 90x200 sizes, as well as a configuration with a double bed below and a single bunk above. The Oslo and Opale models illustrate this range with solid pine frames. Model names matter less than the essentials: weight limits, access, mattresses, and available height.
Is solid pine stable enough for adults?
Pine can be used to make sturdy posts, rails, and guardrails without making the bed excessively heavy. The thickness of the components, the quality of the joints, and reinforcement of the bed bases determine stability. Check the maximum weight limit for each bunk.
A bed for adults should stand on a level floor and be properly squared. Check the fasteners after the first few nights and periodically thereafter. Because wood can shift slightly, this simple maintenance helps keep the frame quiet and secure.
90x190, 90x200, or a double bed: which size should you choose?
The 90x190 size takes up less length and suits most adults of average height. A 90x200 bed adds ten centimeters, which taller people may appreciate. A double configuration generally pairs a wider lower bed with a single top bunk.
For two single beds of the same size, explore 90x200 bunk beds. For three sleeping spaces, see double bunk beds. Measure the bed bases and the outer dimensions separately.
How much ceiling height do you need?
The person on the top bunk should be able to sit up without hitting the ceiling, a sloped ceiling, or a beam. Add the bed’s height to that of the permitted mattress, then allow sufficient clearance. Measuring at the room’s lowest point is safest.
The space between the two bed bases also matters. An adult on the lower bunk should be able to sit up comfortably. A good configuration balances comfort on both levels rather than prioritizing only the top bunk.
How do you choose a ladder for everyday use?
A vertical ladder takes up less floor space. An angled ladder makes climbing more gradual but extends farther into the room. Flat steps offer better footing, while a ladder that can be fitted on either side may help you adapt access to the door and other furniture.
Walk through the route before assembly. The first ladder rungs should remain clear, a light should be within reach, and no furniture corners should obstruct the way down. The person using the top bunk should feel genuinely comfortable climbing down every day.
What mattress should you use on the top bunk?
The mattress must fit the bed base exactly and stay within the stated maximum thickness. A mattress that is too thick reduces the protection provided by the guardrails. A mattress that is easy to handle also simplifies changing the bedding, airing it out, and rotating it on the top bunk.
Compare options in our mattress category. A wood slatted bed base encourages airflow. Keep textiles away from the guardrails and check the condition of the slats during maintenance.
Can the two beds be separated?
Some frames are designed to separate into two single beds, but not all have this feature. Each bunk must have legs, a frame, and joints suitable for independent use.
Never modify a model unless the manufacturer says it can be converted. If flexibility matters, check the instructions and how the beds look when separated. A fixed frame may be more compact; a separable version can better adapt as your living arrangements change.
What do wood certifications mean?
FSC or PEFC labels provide information about the wood’s origin and forest management. Solvent-free, water-based paints protect the pine while limiting unwanted emissions. A natural finish lets more of the wood’s variations and knots show through.
To explore other frames, visit the solid wood bed category. Certification does not replace sound assembly, but it supports the principles behind furniture designed to last.
How do you keep the frame safe over time?
Follow the instructions, use all guardrails, and do not alter any components. Climb to the top bunk only by the ladder. Do not hang heavy loads from the sides or exceed the stated weight limits for the bed bases.
Check the screws, guardrail bars, and slats. After a move, carefully disassemble and reassemble the bed rather than transporting it fully assembled. A night-light or bedside-operated wall light makes moving around at night safer.
How can you make a tall piece of furniture feel less imposing?
Light wood and white reflect light, while a deeper color creates a more architectural presence. Keep bedding patterns to a minimum and choose a few natural textures. Low storage furniture preserves an open view across the room.
A bedroom rug adds softness without obstructing access. Keep the foot of the bed, the ladder, and walkways completely clear. The frame looks more balanced when some wall space around it remains open.
Why choose locally made furniture?
French and European workshops work with pine and beech to demanding standards. Shorter supply chains, water-based finishes, and frames that can be disassembled all contribute to responsible design.
Our French-made beds category brings together locally made models. Above all, compare materials, weight limits, ladders, and repair options: these determine how well the bed works in daily use.
