Living room

How do you create a living room that’s comfortable to spend time in?

The living room hosts many different moments throughout the day. It’s where we talk, rest, read and keep the objects that make a house feel like home. Its layout should therefore start with how you use it. Before choosing a color or collection, note the walkways, windows, outlet locations and space needed for the activities that matter to you. A well-proportioned arrangement lets you move around naturally.

We bring together furniture with complementary purposes, varied materials and different shapes. A cozy sofa can sit alongside a simply designed wooden table; a TV stand with closed storage can balance an open bookcase. You can put your room together gradually and keep pieces you care about. Harmony comes from proportions, recurring colors and the space between furniture, as much as from pieces belonging to the same collection.

Start with the sofa

First choose where your main seating will go. A straight sofa makes it easy to organize a rectangular living room, while a sectional defines a relaxation area in an open-plan space. Our selection of sofas includes standard and sleeper models, with smooth, bouclé or ribbed upholstery. Overall width, seat depth and back height tell you more about a sofa’s footprint and sitting posture than the number of seats alone.

If your living room also serves as your everyday sleeping space, plan for the room needed to open the sofa bed from the start. Sleeper sofas have mattress dimensions and mechanisms specific to each model. The coffee table should be easy to move, and the path between the open bed and the door should remain clear. Thinking this through helps you avoid choosing furniture separately that proves difficult to use together.

A coffee table suited to your seating

The coffee table complements the sofa without filling all the space in front of it. Its top should be easy to reach from the seats, while leaving enough room around it to sit down comfortably. A rectangular table follows the line of a long sofa; a round shape softens an arrangement of straight lines. Sets of two tables let you spread out the surfaces according to how many people are present while keeping the center of the room feeling open.

Your choice of material also depends on how you’ll use the table. Our range includes solid wood, decorative panels and, on certain models, genuine marble tops. A marble-look finish has a different composition and requires different care from natural stone. If you want to keep the top clear, look for drawers and built-in storage. A lift-top mechanism can also bring the work surface closer, provided you allow room for it to open.

Organize equipment and everyday items

The TV stand should first suit your setup. Measure the television’s feet, the devices that go with it and the space needed for connections. A large top does not mean every compartment will fit a game console or amplifier. The stand’s height matters too: consider the screen’s position from your sofa, then compare the usable dimensions of the storage spaces rather than just their number.

For books and decorative objects, a wooden bookcase makes use of wall height. Cubby compartments help organize items of different sizes, while open shelves give you more freedom in arranging them. Alternate books with a few objects without trying to fill every space. Closed storage holds what you prefer to keep out of sight. When setting it up, use the fasteners specified in the instructions and make sure compartments you use every day are easy to reach.

Create a personal corner with an armchair

An armchair can provide extra seating alongside the sofa or create a reading spot near a window. Its orientation changes how the room is used: facing the other seats, it encourages conversation; angled slightly away, it creates a more independent spot. Swivel versions let you change its orientation without moving the whole chair. You should still allow space around the armrests and back.

Wood and cane construction adds an open, airy presence, while bouclé fabrics and upholstered shapes create more volume. We recommend choosing an armchair with your preferred sitting posture in mind. A low, deep seat invites you to settle in differently from a more upright model. The upholstery contributes to the atmosphere, but comfort also depends on proportions and support.

Connect furniture through materials and colors

A console table can furnish a stretch of wall, hold a lamp or help create a transition from the entryway. It should be shallow enough to keep the walkway clear. It can echo the tones of the TV stand or introduce a different material in moderation. Warm wood, a lacquered surface and a touch of stone can coexist if you maintain a common thread, such as a limited color palette or curves repeated in several places.

Living room rugs visually bring the seating together. Choose a size based on the furniture grouping, considering how much of the rug will remain visible once everything is in place. A light-colored rug can tie contrasting pieces together; a stronger color can set the tone for the textiles. Our selection includes washable cotton and wool, depending on the item: compare the composition and care instructions of your chosen rug as well as its pattern.

Create an arrangement that’s easy to change over time

Take time to mark out the furniture’s footprint on the floor before making your final choice. Check that doors and drawers can open, that there’s room in front of the seating and that windows remain accessible. In an already furnished room, start with the need that is least well met: more comfortable seating, extra storage or a better-placed surface. You can then adjust the other elements around that priority.

Explore the different furniture categories to put your living room together at your own pace. Choose sizes suited to your space, materials you enjoy touching and features you’ll actually use. A few thoughtful pairings are enough to create a welcoming room, where furniture supports daily life and still has its place as the décor changes.
