Sleeper sofa

A sleeper sofa for living and sleeping in the same room

A sleeper sofa serves a specific purpose: providing a comfortable living room during the day and a bed every night. This dual function deserves careful consideration. A model that feels good to sit on will not necessarily have bed dimensions that suit your sleep needs. We suggest starting with your sleeping needs and available space, then looking at the seating and finishes.

Our selection includes standard and sectional models upholstered in smooth fabric, bouclé or corduroy. Several models have an express-opening mechanism with a separate mattress. Dimensions, mattress thickness and bed-base construction vary by model. You can choose a sofa with both uses in mind, without assuming that a similar appearance means an identical mechanism.

How do you choose a mechanism for regular use?

How the sofa opens matters when you convert it every day. An express mechanism unfolds the bed from the frame, making it easier to switch between its two uses. On models designed for this, the cushions stay in place during conversion. Look at how you operate the mechanism, the space needed in front of the seat and the parts that move with it. These details matter in a daily routine.

The sofa must be able to open without hitting the coffee table, an overly thick rug or furniture placed in front of it. Plan where you will move items from the center of the living room. A nesting coffee table can make this easier with its separate surfaces, provided you can move the pieces comfortably. The room layout should work both when the bed is open and when the sofa is closed.

What mattress should you choose for sleeping every night?

Compare the bed’s actual width and length, then the thickness of the mattress supplied with your chosen version. Mattress thickness varies across the selection: the Téo model, for example, has a 12 cm mattress, while other models offer 14 cm. Thickness alone does not establish which is more comfortable. The mattress’s composition, support and pairing with the bed base also matter.

For two people, check that the sleeping surface suits your habits and body sizes. The stated seating capacity describes the sofa, not the bed dimensions. A wider version may have a different bed size, even within the same collection. If you plan to replace the mattress later, confirm that it is compatible with the mechanism before choosing a different thickness.

Standard or sectional: arranging the living room around the bed

A standard sofa gives you more flexibility to add a separate armchair or keep a walkway open on one side. It can be a simple solution in a long room, provided you compare its footprint when open. Also consider access to the bed from the sides: easy opening is not enough if making the bed becomes difficult or one sleeper cannot move around comfortably.

A sectional sofa provides a chaise for relaxing and, on some models, may include a storage compartment. When designed for this purpose, the compartment helps organize bedding. Check its capacity, how it opens and whether you can access it in your room. The side of the sectional and whether it is reversible are separate considerations: both must suit the configuration you choose when ordering.

Maintaining seating comfort during the day

Your sleeper sofa will be a sofa much of the time. The seat depth, backrest height and support provided by the armrests should therefore suit the way you like to sit. For reading, you may prefer a more supported posture; for relaxing, a deeper seat may appeal more. Cushions can help adjust your position, but they cannot make up for a sofa that is the wrong size or shape for you.

Also consider the usable width between the armrests. The overall dimensions include the frame and do not represent the full seating area. Information about the foam and suspension can help you compare models. We recommend looking at these features together rather than basing your choice on a single density figure or a general claim of comfort.

Choosing the upholstery and the look

Bouclé sofas add texture to a room with light walls and understated furniture. Corduroy emphasizes the lines of the seat, while smooth fabric suits a more subtle decor. Colors can tie in with the rug, curtains or wood of your storage furniture. For a piece converted every day, also consider how easy it will be to care for the areas you touch often.

Removable fabric covers, where offered, are not necessarily machine washable. Check the care recommendations for the specific model, and do not apply a stain remover without confirming that it is suitable. Cleaning requirements depend on the upholstery’s composition and finish. Reviewing them will help you choose a color and texture you’ll enjoy living with over time.

Planning a practical setup

Measure delivery access points as well as the space needed to open the bed fully. Check the package dimensions and whether any parts of the sofa can be separated. Once installed, the mechanism must remain accessible and the floor area sufficiently clear. For bedding, follow the manufacturer’s guidance on what can stay inside the frame when it folds away. Also let the mattress air out before closing the bed.

Explore all our sofas to compare configurations. The right sleeper sofa makes daily life easier in both positions: a bed suited to your nights, comfortable seating for your days and a conversion that works in your space. Considering these factors from the start can help you create a welcoming living room without complicating your routine.
