Straight sofa

The straight sofa: a flexible starting point for your living room

A straight sofa arranges the seating along a single line. This shape makes it easy to create a conversation area, face a TV stand, or define part of the dining room. It suits many different rooms, provided you choose the right size. A straight sofa can be compact or very deep: its linear shape alone does not tell you how much space it will take up.

Our selection includes standard and sleeper sofas in smooth fabric, bouclé, and corduroy. We invite you to compare their usable widths, depths, and features before choosing a color. The goal is to find seating that suits the way you live, then arrange other pieces around it so every piece remains accessible and movement through the room feels natural.

Place a straight sofa against a wall

This arrangement leaves the center of the room open and works well in living rooms where several doors need to remain accessible. Measure the available wall space, accounting for outlets, radiators, and curtains. It helps to leave a little visual breathing room on either side of the sofa, especially if the arms are wide. Avoid choosing the maximum width simply because it fits between two obstacles.

A rectangular coffee table follows the line of the sofa and provides surface space for the different seats. Its length and height should be in proportion to the seating. If you add an armchair to one side, consider how people will move around the arrangement. A comfortable layout depends not only on the sofa, but also on the distance between pieces and access to each seat.

Use the sofa back to define an open-plan room

In the center of a living room, a straight sofa can separate the seating area from the dining area. Before choosing this layout, consider the finish on the back of the model and the width of the walkway. The back will be visible from several points in the room. Its height, volume, and color will play as much of a role in the layout as the front of the sofa.

You can place a console table behind the sofa if there is enough depth. It can hold a lamp or a few objects without creating a divider that is too tall. Be sure to keep outlets accessible and leave room to clean the back of the sofa. A central layout also calls for planning delivery and moving the furniture into place, particularly if the sofa has several sections or a sleeper mechanism.

Standard or sleeper sofa: choose the function that suits you

A standard straight sofa is designed primarily for sitting and relaxing. The models in our selection have different proportions, from taller backs to deep seats. The Bali sofa, for example, offers generous proportions with an overall width of 270 cm. Consider this kind of size in the context of the room’s floor plan: it can be very comfortable if walkways and other furniture are properly sized.

A sleeper sofa adds an everyday sleeping space without changing the overall layout. Compare its dimensions open and closed, the mattress size, and how the mechanism works. A straight sofa may be easy to position during the day but need plenty of space in front of it at night. Plan for the coffee table’s position and access to the bed when designing the living room.

Two or three seats: start with actual measurements

To choose between a two-seat sofa and a longer version, start with how many people usually use it. Then look at the space between the armrests. A generously sized frame can have a large overall footprint without offering proportionately more seating space. The overall width is the key measurement for placement; the usable seat width helps you assess how much seating it provides.

A three-seat sofa can be the main seating in a shared living room. You might also prefer a shorter version and leave room for a separate armchair. This second arrangement makes it easier for everyone to face different directions. The best choice depends on your household’s routines and the room’s proportions, rather than a rule that always favors the largest possible sofa.

What seat depth suits the way you sit?

A deep seat lets you tuck up your legs or settle in with cushions. For long conversations or reading sessions, you may prefer a depth that supports your back while allowing your feet to rest on the floor. Seat height and backrest angle also affect how it feels. Consider these measurements together; a difference of a few centimeters can change your posture, even on two sofas that look similar.

The product details describe the construction and padding of each model. The foam, suspension, and cushion shape work together. We recommend not confusing density with firmness: a technical specification tells you more about the material, but cannot, on its own, describe how comfortable it feels. Your height and habits remain essential considerations.

Add character through fabric

A bouclé sofa adds texture to a simple arrangement. Corduroy gives surfaces a more pronounced rhythm, while a smooth fabric highlights seams and shapes. To balance the room, consider your choice alongside the curtains, rug, and wood tones. A color already present in the room can create a subtle connection without making everything match.

Before deciding, check the upholstery cleaning instructions and whether the covers are removable. Removable covers should not be assumed to be machine washable. Finally, consider the package dimensions and the route into the living room. Our selection lets you choose a straight sofa with a silhouette that’s easy to pair with other furniture, along with the comfort and features you’ll use every day.
