Trundle bed mattresses
To choose a trundle bed mattress, start with the dimensions and height your bed allows. Our selection includes foam mattresses and a compact spring model. Check each model separately for the main bed and the lower trundle.
How do you choose a mattress for a trundle bed?
A trundle bed provides two sleeping spaces while taking up less room when closed. The main mattress rests on the upper section, while the second usually needs to fit inside the structure. The two positions do not always have the same requirements.
Before choosing, note the width, length, and especially the maximum height specified for each sleeping area. Follow the bed’s instructions rather than relying on the mattress category name alone.
How thick can the lower mattress be?
The available space beneath the bed is crucial. If your trundle drawer accommodates a maximum of 16 cm, a 17 cm mattress will not fit, even if it is described as compact. Also allow room for bedding if the manufacturer says it can remain in the drawer.
This check is important across our selection: mattress heights vary by model and version. Choose a compatible version before comparing firmness. A mattress should never be compressed to close the bed.
Foam or springs for a trundle bed?
We offer foam constructions as well as a compact pocket-spring model. Foam mattresses may come in several thicknesses depending on the model; springs provide a different feel of support, provided there is enough space.
You may have more freedom to choose the comfort of the main mattress if the frame allows it. For the lower mattress, a dimensional fit comes first, ahead of preferences for surface feel or material.
90x190 or 90x200: follow the bed base dimensions
The 90x190 mattresses and 90x200 mattresses have different lengths. Check the dimensions of each bed base; you cannot determine them from the furniture’s exterior alone.
If the two sleeping surfaces need to sit close together, compare the combined height of each bed base and mattress. Two mattresses of the same thickness will not necessarily sit at the same level if their bases do not rise to the same height.
Keep the bed easy to operate
The mattress’s weight and ability to hold its shape matter when the bed is opened and closed regularly. Check that the mechanisms move freely and that fabrics do not catch in the casters or hinges. Leave enough clear space in front of the bed.
For a bed that also serves as seating, our daybed mattress category lets you explore suitable configurations. The height you choose also affects sitting comfort during the day.
Caring for both mattresses
Let the lower mattress air out before closing the bed. Choose a well-fitting mattress protector and fitted sheet without excess fabric. Instructions for rotating, flipping, and cleaning vary by model.
We recommend noting the requirements of both positions before ordering. You can then select mattresses that provide suitable comfort at night while keeping the trundle bed easy to open, close, and care for.
