Living room rugs

How do you choose a living room rug?

A living room rug adds a textile surface that connects the seating and softens the space. It can define a relaxation area in an open room, introduce color or balance furniture made from contrasting materials. Choosing one starts with the size of the area you want to bring together. Measure the sofa, armchairs and coffee table, then determine how much of the rug will remain visible.

Our selection includes washable cotton rugs and wool rugs, in rectangular and round shapes as well as styles suited to narrower walkways. Sizes and colors vary by collection. We recommend checking each model’s composition and care instructions, as not every rug requires the same care.

What size rug should you choose for the sofa area?

A rug can extend under at least part of the seating or sit in front of it, depending on the room’s layout and available space. What matters is maintaining a clear visual connection between the furniture. A strip of rug barely visible beneath a large sofa may lose its decorative effect, while a rug that is too small can look isolated beneath the coffee table.

Large living room rugs can create a spacious seating area, but this subcategory also includes a range of sizes. Check the exact measurements. The Duetto model is available, for example, in 140 × 200 cm and 170 × 240 cm. These are specific examples and do not represent the entire collection.

A round or rectangular rug?

A rectangular rug follows the length of a sofa and frames a seating group. Its width determines how much space it occupies in front of and beneath the furniture. A round rug softens straight lines and can suit a reading nook or round coffee table. The version of the Trace model shown has a diameter of 160 cm.

Consider the rug’s shape in relation to how you move through the room. Its edge should not get in the way of a frequently used walkway. If several pieces of furniture rest on it, they should remain stable. Mark the rug’s outline on the floor and check doors, swivel chairs and usual walking routes before deciding on a size.

Washable cotton or wool?

Several rugs made primarily of cotton are machine washable, as indicated on their product pages. Duetto, for example, contains 97% cotton combined with other recycled fibers and has a reversible construction. Sizes and properties vary by product: do not assume the entire collection shares this feature. Always check the instructions for the size you choose.

Wool brings a different texture and a warm feel. The selection includes wool rugs in several colors and proportions. Follow the care recommendations on each product page. The presence of cotton in other products does not mean a wool rug can be cared for in the same way.

Choosing a color that complements your furniture

Colorful living room rugs can introduce shades of blue, amber, green, pink or earth tones, depending on the model. A rug can pick up a shade from the sofa or provide the main contrast in an understated room. Consider how much color will remain visible once the rug is in place: a dominant shade in a photograph may look subtler when the table and seating cover part of the pattern.

A beige living room rug provides a light, easy-to-pair foundation, with a range of shades and patterns. Beige does not necessarily mean solid-colored. Natural fibers and color blends can create variations. View the rug alongside your flooring and sofa to choose a warmth that suits the room.

A modern pattern to bring rhythm to the room

Modern living room rugs include patterned designs, reversible constructions and a range of shapes. A graphic pattern can bring energy to furniture with understated lines; a subtler pattern gives a textured sofa more room to stand out. Avoid combining too many equally bold patterns across the rug, curtains and cushions. A few coordinated details are enough to create a personal feel.

The coffee table covers a significant part of the rug. Mark out its position on the floor to check how much of the pattern will remain visible. A round coffee table can create an appealing contrast with a rectangular rug, while a table with similar lines creates a more orderly arrangement. The choice depends on the effect you want and the space for moving around the furniture.

Caring for your specific rug

For a rug described as washable, check the washing machine’s capacity, the temperature and the drying method specified for your chosen size. A large rug may require different equipment from a small one, even within the same collection. Use a suitable detergent and cycle rather than assuming one general method works for every fiber.

For everyday care, remove dust according to the manufacturer’s recommendations and address spills promptly. Handle fringes, braids and threads gently. Do not pull a loose thread. Rotate the rug if its use allows, to distribute exposure and foot traffic. This will help preserve its color, pattern and place in the living room.
